What is ibogaine?
Ibogaine is a naturally occurring psychoactive alkaloid found in the Tabernanthe iboga plant, native to Central West Africa. Historically, indigenous Bwiti traditions have used iboga root bark in rites of passage and spiritual ceremonies. This history should not be confused with modern medical approval or a proven route through drug addiction.
Interest in ibogaine treatment comes partly from reports that it may interrupt withdrawal symptoms and reduce drug cravings, particularly in opioid addiction, alcohol use, and stimulant use. Its neurobiological effects involve multiple systems in the brain, including opioid, serotonin, dopamine, and NMDA receptors within the central nervous system.
That therapeutic potential remains uncertain. An overview of the substance on ScienceDirect’s ibogaine topic page describes a complex pharmacology rather than a settled clinical answer. Scientific research and clinical trials are still needed to establish whether benefits outweigh medical risks for particular people.
